Within Exmoor National Park, Heron's Rest sits directly on the South bank of The East Lyn river in the tiny hamlet of Rockford. We are located directly opposite The Rockford Inn , which serves fine food and local ales most lunchtimes and evenings throughout the year. In low season the Rockford Inn closes on Mondays. One mile up the road, and you're in Brendon. You'll find another fine establishment here in the form of The Staghunters Inn. Again, fine food and local ales served most lunchtimes and evenings. Booking is always advisable if planning a meal in The Rockford or The Staghunters, particularly in high season.
On the opposite side of the river to Heron’s Rest, passes The Coleridge Way. A fifty one mile long footpath named after the 17th century poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge. Walk this footpath down-river towards Lynmouth, and within 1.5 miles you will arrive at the beauty spot of Watersmeet.
If walking or fishing are favoured pursuits, you will find Heron's Rest in an ideal location. There are numerous footpaths in this area of outstanding beauty. Walk South, and you will soon be on what many people consider the 'true Exmoor' of Brendon Common. Undulating, heather strewn moorland favoured by our local Exmoor ponies. From the top of the Common, drop down into Badgworthy Water and follow the river through Lorna Doone Valley into Malmsmead. A picturesque hamlet ideal for a refreshment break.
There are several riding stables within the area offering a variety of equine activities. The closest being Brendon Manor Stables.
In season, the East Lyn river benefits from some of the best salmon and trout fishing to be found in England. Permits are available in The Rockford Inn and various other local outlets. Fish from the patio of Heron's Rest if you wish!
If you wish to travel further afield, Heron's Rest is also an ideal base for touring Exmoor, and the North Devon and Somerset coastline.
